Different from American schools, Chinese schools usually assign a huge amount of homework during breaks, which has always made me suffer. I could enjoy the break fully because the thought of having a lot of homework was always on my mind.
However, I discovered that some kind of homework could also be enjoyable on my third grade. Starting from my third grade in elementary school, my Chinese teacher started to assign reading homework over breaks. She told us to read at least two books, make a list of all the books that we read, and summarize them.
Just reading as many books as I normally would, the number of books that I read on my book list soon exceeded what my teacher required. I wrote a short summary for each of the book and stated whether I liked it or not and why. After we turning in our lists after the first break that the homework was assigned, my teacher showed my list to the whole class, saying that I had the longest list and that I have made her proud.
Since then I fell in love with reading many books and having the longest book lists every time after breaks. I would drag my father to the bookstore and buy as many books as my father and I can carry at the beginning of every break, imagining my Chinese teacher showing my list again to the class. Although I think no one even cared about competing with me or who owned the longest book list, it was just important for me to feel like I was reading the most in my class.
In conclusion, it fits the definition of being literate because this was how I discovered my great passion and advantages in reading under the influence of my elementary school Chinese teacher.
