When we were at the 6th grade in the elementary school, someone started a trend of bringing novels to school. Girls were more interested in reading books about romance and entangled triangle relationships, where as boys usually read books about fighting, adventures, and magic. Mostly people read their books between classes, but some people tried to read them during the class. They read them under their desks, thinking that the teacher probably could not find out. However, if teachers found out, their books would be taken away for one semester.
I was not the craziest about those romance novels, but I had still read a lot since almost every girl (and some guys) was reading it. The person who had the newest or the most trendy book would suddenly become the most popular student. People would all gather around his or her table after class and beg for that person to lend the book to them, and then the book owner gave each person a “number” which indicated the hierarchy of who read the book first.
Although I had also fought for those romance books before, I was not that into that type of books. I found out that I was more interested in the adventurous books that usually boys like to read after reading one. At first, I did not want people to see me reading that kind of books since I did not want to look different to other girls. Slowly, after seeing that nobody was caring, I decided that it was nothing. I could read whatever kinds of books that I wanted without caring about other people’s opinion. I should insist on what I like. Therefore, what I have received from my classmates was not only more books that I read but also the faith of pursuing my interest.
